UK defence secretary responds to email gaffe

February 16th, 2011 by David No Comments

The UK’s defence secretary Liam Fox has spoken about his ‘fury’ over a blunder that meant 38 long-serving soldiers were notified by email that their contracts were being terminated.

The 38 men are British Army warrant officers, one of whom is reportedly serving in Afghanistan.

“I am furious that such a situation should occur,” said Fox. “This is no way to treat our Armed Forces personnel. I want to know how this was allowed to happen and what measures will be put in place to prevent this from happening again.”

An Army spokesman said that commanders had apologised to the soldiers and that they will receive advice and support, but will still lose their jobs.

The Ministry of Defence says this is a result of standard manning reviews rather than as part of cuts outlined in the Strategic Defence and Security Review last year.

Armed forces minister Nick Harvey also apologised for the email blunder, calling it a ‘serious administrative error’ and adding that appropriate steps were being taken to ensure it does not recur.
